Get Up and Dance: The Joy of Intuitive Movement
Aug 10, 2026Have you ever heard a song that made your body want to move before you had even thought about it?
Sometimes, movement can be that simple. It doesn’t have to be choreographed, polished or performed for anyone else. It can begin with one song, one breath and permission to follow what feels good in your body.
Dance gives us an opportunity to step away from our thoughts for a moment and reconnect with ourselves through rhythm, curiosity and play.
Let the Music Move You
Music has a wonderful way of shifting the atmosphere around us. A familiar beat can lift our energy, soften a difficult moment or help us release feelings that have been sitting beneath the surface.
When I invite movement into my day, the aim isn’t to get every step right. There may not even be any “steps” at all. It is simply about listening to the music and allowing the body to respond in its own way.
You might sway, stretch, shake, bounce or move gently from side to side. There is no correct way to do it.
Movement Without Judgment
Many of us become self-conscious when we dance. We wonder how we look, whether we are coordinated or whether we are doing it properly.
But intuitive movement isn’t about performance. It is an invitation to notice what your body needs and explore movement without judgment.
You can begin by:
- Choosing a song that matches or gently shifts your current mood.
- Taking a breath and noticing how your body feels.
- Starting with one small, comfortable movement.
- Allowing that movement to change naturally with the music.
- Letting go of the need to look graceful or get it “right.”
If one side feels different from the other, that’s okay. If the movement feels playful or slightly awkward, that’s okay too. The value is in giving yourself room to explore.
Creating a Small Movement Ritual
You don’t need a dance class or a long block of free time to bring more movement into your life.
Try playing one song while you get ready in the morning, take a break from work or reset at the end of the day. Close your eyes if that feels comfortable, breathe and let yourself move for the length of the song.
Even a few minutes can become a gentle ritual, a moment to come back to your body and make space for calm, freedom and joy.
Dance Is for You, Too
Dance does not belong only to trained dancers. Movement is available to all of us, and your way of moving does not need to resemble anyone else’s.
So, the next time a song makes you want to move, see what happens when you follow that feeling.
Turn it up. Take a breath. Let your body lead.
And most importantly, have fun.
A gentle invitation
Choose one song today and give yourself permission to move through it without judgment. There is nothing to perfect and no one to impress, just you, the music and the moment.
Don't miss a beat!
